A new state law, effective Thursday, permits delivery drivers to use golf carts on public roads in Kentucky. UPS plans to take advantage of the law this coming holiday season by using modified golf carts to supplement its fleet of trucks to better meet increased demand.

Teamsters Local 89, the union representing UPS drivers, took issue with the delivery strategy, citing concerns over pay and driver safety.

UPS spokesman Glenn Zaccara told WSJ delivery drivers in Kentucky are paid $18.75 per hour. Part-time employees would operate the golf carts and receive $15 per hour in compensation. Mr. Zaccara also said the golf carts would be outfitted with additional safety features.
