UC San Diego Health has become the first in the country to offer radiation therapy for the treatment of skin cancer through a wearable device.
The device — called CivaDerm — operates like a bandage and delivers a prescribed radiation dose directly to the skin to treat basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, according to a Sept. 23 news release from UC San Diego Health.
Only select patients are eligible for the device, which is applied by a physician and worn for about four to five days. Eligibility factors include tumor location and a patient’s ability to follow radiation safety precautions while wearing the device.
