Red Cross offers blood donors $5 Amazon gift card to boost summer donations

The American Red Cross often sees a steep drop in blood donations starting around Memorial Day and continuing through the summer, due to vacations and school breaks.

To encourage more donations around the holiday weekend, donors who give blood between now and June 10 will receive a $5 Amazon gift card, courtesy of Suburban Propane. In addition, individuals who donate from May 25-29 will receive a Red Cross T-shirt while supplies last, the organization announced May 21.

“Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a lifesaving blood transfusion,” the Red Cross said. The organization needs to collect more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations every day to provide adequate blood supplies to about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide.
