The Red Cross is asking eligible individuals of all blood types to donate to ensure a sufficient nationwide blood supply.
The organization said that the insufficient blood supply is a result of fewer blood drives being held last week due to the holiday. The agency said it is experiencing a “blood emergency” in some states, meaning there is less than a three day supply of most blood types.
“Currently blood donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in; blood donors are needed to help avoid delays in lifesaving medical care,” the Red Cross said in a news release.
To help boost blood supply, the Red Cross has added about 8,000 appointments at blood donation centers and community blood drives nationwide.
