The American Red Cross needs 11,500 additional type O donations to reach enough blood supply. Type O, a universal donor type, is the most used in transfusions.
Additionally, Bloodworks Northwest is facing a shortage of B-negative blood to give to the 90 hospitals it serves in the Pacific Northwest.
Both organizations are offering incentives to bring in more donors. At the Red Cross, donors will receive a $5 Amazon gift card. At Bloodworks, donors who give blood between May 18 and June 2 will be entered in a drawing to win Apple AirPods.
