Pharmaceutical giant Merck will shut down its manufacturing site in Northumberland County, Pa., resulting in 163 job losses.

Layoffs will happen in three phases with the first starting in May 2025, the second in June or July 2025 and the final round in 2026, according to a WARN filed with the state’s Department of Labor and Industry.

The Riverside, Pa., facility, which produced active pharmaceutical ingredients for antibiotics has been winding down operations since 2022. Merck, which has multiple facilities in eastern Pennsylvania, emphasized its continued commitment to the state, citing a $3 billion investment in its Pennsylvania operations and a workforce of approximately 14,000 employees.
