Here are five things to know.

1. The Recall Unsafe Drugs Act — sponsored by Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn. — would give the FDA mandatory recall authority over all drugs and homeopathic products.

2. While many consumers believe the FDA already holds this power, the agency can only demand a mandatory recall for infant formula, medical devices, tissue products and biologics, according to the report.

3. The current law allows companies to ignore the FDA’s recommendation to remove products from the market when they are deemed unsafe.

4. “As it stands, the FDA would have to go through an arduous legal process to take action against manufacturers …. This is unacceptable and threatens the health and safety of American families ,” said Rep. DeLauro. “The Recall Unsafe Drugs Act will enable the FDA to step in and issue a mandatory recall of drugs that have been found to cause serious health consequences or death.”
