Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has taken legal action against Contec, a Chinese medical devicemaker, and Miami-based reseller Epsimed, alleging the companies sold patient monitors that pose cybersecurity risks and misled customers about safety.

According to a June 16 news release from Mr. Uthmeier’s office, Contec’s monitors included a hidden “backdoor” allowing unauthorized access and were programmed to transmit patient data to a Chinese IP address linked to a university.

The attorney general alleges both companies violated Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act by concealing security flaws and misrepresenting the monitors’ quality and approval status. The release said Mr. Uthmeier “may seek damages, civil penalties, and injunctive relief to protect consumers in the future.”
