About 20 hospitals in southern Colorado rely on Vitalant for their blood needs. Vitalant delivers blood to the hospitals each day from its office in Denver, as long as there are enough donors. The company hopes people who used to donate at the hospitals will continue to do so through Vitalant.

Colorado Springs-based Penrose Hospital said it is more efficient to close its own blood donation facility.
