Allergan acquires Zeltiq Aesthetics for nearly $2.5B

Allergan will pay $2.48 billion to acquire Zeltiq Aesthetics, reports Reuters.

Here are four things to know.

1. Through the deal, Allergan will add Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting System to its portfolio of aesthetic products, which includes Botox.

2. The CoolSculpting System is intended to kill fat cells through a cooling mechanism.

3. In 2016, Zeltiq’s fat loss system generated $350 million in sales — paid directly by consumers as insurers do not cover the system, reports Reuters.

4. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2017.
