Abbott's wearable, fingerstick-free glucose monitor earns FDA approval

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved Abbott's FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System.

The FreeStyle Libre is the first continuous glucose monitoring system that does not require adult patients to draw a blood sample from their fingertip.

The device contains a small sensor wire that is inserted below the skin's surface to regularly measure and monitor glucose levels. Patients can assess glucose levels by waving a mobile reader device above the sensor wire. The device can be worn for up to 10 days.
