The FDA has flagged four medical device recalls and alerts tied to risks that include device failure, oxygen complications and potential patient injury.
Here are four recalls to know:
1. Angiographic syringes (Medline, Avid Medical) Medline has recalled Namic angiographic rotating adaptor control syringes due to risk of the adaptor unwinding, which could cause disconnection, air embolism, blood loss or infection. Avid Medical issued an April 10 alert for convenience kits containing the syringes. Four serious injuries have been reported, with no deaths.
2. Ventilator circuits (Baxter): Baxter has updated use instructions for Volara single-patient use circuits after identifying risks of oxygen desaturation and lung injury when used in-line with ventilators. The FDA reported seven serious injuries tied to the issue between May 30, 2022, and March 24, 2026, as well as one serious injury and two deaths in earlier reporting.
3. Sizing catheters (Cook Medical): On April 9 Cook Medical alerted customers to remove certain sizing catheters after identifying a risk of marker band cracking or breakage. Potential complications include device fragmentation, vessel injury and increased procedure time. No serious injuries or deaths have been reported.
4. Convenience kits (Avid Medical): On April 10, Avid Medical advised removing affected angiographic syringes from kits and discarding them due to risks of disconnection and air embolism, which could lead to serious injury or death.
The FDA continues to review these issues and has advised providers to follow recall instructions, including removing or correcting affected devices and monitoring patients for complications.
