RWJBarnabas garners healthcare sustainability award

West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas received Stryker's Sustainability Solutions' Gold Healthy Hospital Award.

Stryker, a provider of medical device reprocessing and remanufacturing services in Tempe, Ariz., awards its Healthy Hospital designation to facilities showcasing "outstanding" healthcare sustainability leadership and hospital quality through reprocessing single-use medical devices. Reprocessed devices include pulse oximetry, tourniquet cuffs, blood pressure cuffs and compression hose.

Across 11 RWJBarnabas acute care hospitals, the system's reprocessing program achieved $2.2 million in supply cost savings in 2016 by diverting 53,588 pounds of medical waste from landfills. The supply cost savings represented a 28 percent increase compared to 2015, and the savings have almost doubled in the first six months of 2017.
