Only eight hospitals with the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s highest honor, Magnet with Distinction, also hold five CMS stars on nurse communication.
Since launching the Magnet with Distinction program in 2022, the ANCC has bestowed the designation to 108 hospitals: 104 in the U.S., two in Indonesia, one in Saudi Arabia and another in Scotland.
Of those 104 U.S. hospitals, only eight achieved five out of five stars on nurse communication from CMS’ Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. HCAHPS surveys conducted between July 2024 and June 2025 recorded 567 hospitals with five stars for nurse communication, according to CMS data released May 15.
The eight hospitals are:

- Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital
- Deaconess Memorial Medical Center (Jasper, Ind.)
- Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital (Sandwich, Ill.)
- Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Hospital
- Sentara Albemarle Medical Center (Elizabeth City, N.C.)
- St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center (Roslyn, N.Y.)
- WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital (York, Pa.)
About a dozen of the remaining hospitals are not covered by CMS HCAHPS data because they are specialty, rehabilitation, international, children’s or research hospitals. The survey usually covers adult inpatient acute care hospitals.
