The top 63 hospitals across 4 patient experience metrics

Only 63 hospitals across 25 states had five-star CMS ratings for nurse communication, physician communication, cleanliness and quietness.

Researchers at West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health found these metrics are drivers of patient satisfaction during a hospital stay. Patients who felt listened to and kept informed by their team, and who had a clean, restful room were more likely to rate their overall hospital experience as excellent. This remained true for patients at large medical centers and smaller community hospitals.

Becker’s compared rankings of facilities with five-stars in cleanliness, quietness, nurse communication and physician communication to find which hospitals made all four lists. We found:

  1. Wisconsin had the most hospitals on all lists at eight, followed by West Virginia and Nebraska with six and five, respectively.
  2. Most of the 63 hospitals are small rural or community hospitals, VA medical centers or specialty hospitals. Many large academic medical centers ranked individually for each metric, but did not rank across multiple metrics.
  3. Ochsner Health and Valley Health are the only systems to have two hospitals that ranked in all four categories:
  4. About 30% of hospitals that ranked five-stars in physician communication also ranked for five-stars in the other three categories.
