Massachusetts General Hospital received $655 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health in fiscal 2024 — a slight decrease from the $675 million it secured in 2023, yet it remained the most-awarded hospital in the U.S.
Six of the top 20 recipients are located in the Boston area, and nearly one-third specialize in pediatric or cancer care, highlighting where federal research priorities and capacity are concentrated.
The data comes from the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, which each year analyzes NIH funding based on the agency’s public release of year-end grant data. For fiscal 2024, NIH awarded more than $37.2 billion in extramural funding through 65,074 grants or contracts to roughly 45,200 principal investigators.
This year’s figures arrive as NIH funding faces potential disruption. The Trump administration has proposed capping indirect cost reimbursements for medical research — which cover overhead such as lab space and administrative support — at 15%, down from the current average of 27% to 28%. While a federal judge has temporarily blocked the change from taking effect, the uncertainty is already causing disruptions at academic medical centers and research institutions nationwide.
