To identify the happiest cities in the U.S., WalletHub’s analysts examined over 180 of the largest U.S. cities. The analysts looked at each city based on 28 key indicators of happiness, ranging from depression rate to income-growth rate to average leisure time spent per day.

WalletHub graded each metric on a 100-point scale, where a score of 100 represented maximum happiness. Analysts then determined each city’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its total score.
