11 health institutions land on National Academy of Inventors’ top 60 list

Eleven healthcare institutions earned spots on the National Academy of Inventors’ 2024 list.

The National Academy of Inventors released its annual list of the 60 top nonprofits and government agencies May 29. The list, based on data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, ranks organizations by the number of U.S. utility patents granted in calendar year 2024.

Several health systems, medical schools and research centers earned spots on the list:

  • Mass General Brigham (Somerville, Mass.) – Ranked No. 7 with 205 patents

  • Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.) – Ranked No. 12 with 118 patents

  • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles) – Ranked No. 35 with 32 patents

  • Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute (Tampa, Fla.) – Ranked No. 37 with 30 patents

  • Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Seattle) – Tied at No. 43 with 26 patents

  • National Cancer Center (Rockville, Md.) – Ranked No. 45 with 24 patents

  • Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Bronx, N.Y.) – Tied at No. 46 with 23 patents

  • Baylor College of Medicine (Houston) – Tied at No. 49 with 21 patents

  • Scripps Research Institute (San Diego) – Ranked No. 51 with 20 patents

  • Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (New York City) – Ranked No. 52 with 19 patents

  • Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center – Ranked No. 53 with 18 patents
