10 safest, least safe US states

Vermont is the safest state in the U.S., according to an Oct. 5 ranking from personal finance website WalletHub.

To build the ranking, WalletHub compared the 50 states across five categories: personal and residential safety, financial safety, road safety, workplace safety and emergency preparedness. The categories were measured using 52 metrics, including health-related ones such as overdose deaths per capita, the share of uninsured residents, and emergency medical technicians and paramedics per capita.

Here are the 10 safest and least safe states in the U.S., per WalletHub, with each state’s workplace safety rank in parentheses:
