The University of Alabama at Birmingham has launched a granulomatous mastitis steroid injection service to treat patients with idiopathic granulomatous mastitis, a rare inflammatory breast condition.
The service uses ultrasound-guided steroid injections to deliver medication directly to affected breast tissue, according to a Sept. 9 news release. The targeted approach is designed to reduce inflammation while avoiding side effects associated with systemic therapies.
Patients can receive the injections alone or alongside systemic medications or surgical planning. UAB’s approach involves collaboration across breast imaging, surgery and medical management.
