The technology produces a high-resolution image through CT scan while the patient lies in the prone position, according to an Oct. 21 news release from the university.
The grant will be used to refine the technology and recruit 600 participants to compare imaging results with 3D mammography.
The researchers hope the alternative method will be an effective screening method for patients with dense breasts or patients who avoid mammograms due to the pain caused by compression, the release said.
