Stanford (Calif.) Medicine appointed Umar Mahmood, MD, PhD, chair of its department of radiology, effective Jan. 16.
Dr. Mahmood joined the organization after three decades at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he served as chief of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging and held multiple research leadership roles, according to a Jan. 22 news release.
He is the immediate past president of the Radiological Society of North America, which represents 53,000 radiologic professionals across more than 160 countries. During his career, Dr. Mahmood has received more than $25 million in grant funding as a principal investigator, published more than 200 manuscripts and mentored more than 100 trainees.
At Stanford, he will lead efforts in clinical care and research, with a focus on advancing applications of artificial intelligence and theranostics in imaging and patient care.
