RadCare, a national radiology group, was awarded a two-year contract with the hospital, effective July 5, based on a request for proposal process. The incumbent radiology group is opposing this decision in a hearing scheduled July 3 in Honolulu before the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ Office of Administrative Hearings.
Maui Radiology Associates claims RadCare uses a corporate model of radiology services and will not be able to provide the level of physicians that Maui Radiology does. In contrast, RadCare and hospital administrators say the new group will be able to provide the same or better service, according to the report.
In the hospital’s request for proposals process, RadCare was ranked first, followed by AllegiantMD, Tacoma Radiological Associates and Radiology Associates in last place. Scores were weighted 10 percent for background experience and references, 30 percent for service delivery plan, 30 percent for management and control and 30 percent for cost.
Providers were selected by a committee of two physicians and three state-employed hospital leaders with the final selection by the Maui Regional Board of Hawaii Health Services Corp. This regional board chose RadCare, overriding the hospital medical executive committee’s recommendation of Maui Radiology, according to the report.
RadCare is estimated to save the hospital $600,000 per year. Maui Radiology says these savings may be negated by lost referrals due to the hospital’s override of the medical executive committee’s recommendation, according to the report.
