Thirty-two percent of all U.S. Medicare patients with low-back pain who were treated at a hospital in 2009 had MRIs instead of the less expensive option, whereas 41 percent in Minnesota chose MRIs over recommended alternatives.
Some Minnesota hospitals have questioned the government report’s methodology and other possible errors.
