There was a 76.5% decline in CMS reimbursement for MRI between 2003 and 2025, according to a study published Nov. 4 in Clinical Imaging.
Researchers analyzed CMS fee schedules from 2003 to 2025 and adjusted for inflation based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the study.
While CMS’ reimbursement decreased “substantially” for all common imaging exams, the decrease was most prominent for MRI, which fell by a mean of $1,004.33 from peak reimbursement during the study period, the study authors wrote.
CMS reimbursement for CT during the study period decreased by a mean of $466.10, or 69.1%.
