Vanguard's Phoenix Health Plan Signs New Contract With Arizona Medicaid

VHS Phoenix Health Plan, the Arizona-based health insurer within Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanguard Health Systems, has signed a new three-year contract with Arizona's Medicaid program, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Effective Oct. 1, 2013, through Sept. 30, 2016, PHP will cover Medicaid beneficiaries in nine Arizona counties. The contract is capped, meaning PHP's membership will have a limit.

The signing of a new contract seemed bleak earlier this year. In March, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System denied a contract to PHP for the upcoming fiscal year but did not say way. Vanguard then requested that AHCCCS allow the health plan to receive a capped contract in two counties, Maricopa and Pima, where almost two-thirds of PHP's members reside.

The recently signed deal includes Maricopa and Pima counties, as well as seven other surrounding counties.
