The researchers applied a systematic search strategy to five electronic reference databases, which included medical journals, conference proceedings, electronic gray literature and study bibliographies. Of the 41 titles included in the study, the researchers found a total of 827 ICD-10 codes that had been used to identify adverse drug events, with a large degree of variability between studies in the numbers and types of codes used.
These findings provide a basis for establishing comprehensive and agreed-upon code sets for identifying adverse drug events in administrative health data, according to the researchers.
