Humana's 1Q Profit Dips 21%

Net income at health insurer Humana took a hit in the three months ended March 31, 2012, dropping from $315 million in the first quarter of 2011 to $248 million this past quarter.

The 21.3 percent dip in profit was exacerbated by Humana's operating expenses, which were 13.1 percent higher in the first quarter. Humana's total revenue increased 11.2 percent, from $9.19 billion in the first quarter of 2011 to $10.22 billion.

However, Humana continued to boost its Medicare Advantage membership. Humana had 1,883,800 MA enrollees by the end of March 31, 2012 — a 15 percent jump from the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2011. Those membership numbers included the 62,600 people that were added after Humana's acquisition of Arcadian Management Services was finalized.
