Highmark, UPMC Strike Contract Deal

Insurer Highmark and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have reached an agreement to provide Highmark customers with in-network access to all UPMC providers until 2015 — extending the 2013 deadline of their previous agreement, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett brought the two organizations together weeks ago to negotiate with the help of a mediator. In the report, Mr. Corbett was unable to provide details on the agreement, which will cover Highmark Commercial and Medicare Advantage members.

The agreement follows a one-year hiatus in negotiations between the organizations after talks broke down. UPMC did not want to contract with Highmark upon learning of its pending plans to acquire West Penn Allegheny Health System, a local competitor to the hospital giant.

The contract's run-out period was previously slated for June 30, 2013.
