Mr. Varnum was president of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, a 353-bed hospital based in Lebanon, N.H., that is part of Dartmouth-Hitchcock, from 1978 to 2006.

New Hampshire’s Medicaid expansion commission will study how the state can move forward on expanding the program under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The group must issue a report to Gov. Hassan by Oct. 15.
