CMS to Hold Off Enforcement of HIPAA Version 5010 Standards Until March 2012

CMS' Office of E-Health Standards and Services will not initiate enforcement of Version 5010 transaction standards for hospitals, physician practices and other HIPAA-covered entities until March 31, 2012, according to a CMS news release (pdf).

Although the compliance date for Version 5010 is still Jan. 1, 2012, the OESS made the decision to hold off on enforcing the rule based on feedback revealing a majority of providers and trading partners would not be in compliance by Jan. 1. However, the OESS will still accept complaints associated with compliance issues during the 90-day "enforcement discretion" period, according to the release.

The OESS still encourages all HIPAA-covered entities to work with trading partners to become compliant with the new standards, as it is a prerequisite for using ICD-10 effective Oct. 1, 2013.
