CMS Revises Medicare RAC Letters

CMS has revised the letter that is sent to healthcare providers regarding alleged overpayments within the Recovery Audit Contractor program, according to an AHA News Now report.

A sample of the new letter can be found here (pdf). CMS said the “R” before the letter number will help hospitals and providers identify the letter as a RAC-initiated statement, which providers can then redirect to the appropriate staff or department.

Starting in Jan. 2012, Medicare Administrative Contractors will take over the responsibility of issuing demand letters.
