CMS Dishes Out 18th CO-OP Loan

CMS awarded $69.4 million to the Colorado Health Insurance Cooperative — a Consumer Operated and Oriented Plan and the 18th such CO-OP to receive a loan.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act allots roughly $3.8 billion for CO-OPs, which are non-profit health insurers directed by consumers. So far, CMS has awarded almost $1.4 billion in CO-OP loans.

CO-OPs will be able to offer health plans in health insurance exchanges starting Jan. 1, 2014.
