7 Reasons Why Physician Practices Have Not Started Preparing for ICD-10

Most physician practices believe that they have more time to prepare for ICD-10, which goes into effect on October 1, 2014, according to the "ICD-10 Readiness Survey," released by Navicure, a medical claims clearinghouse for physician practices.

The survey includes responses from more than 500 physician practices.

Seven reasons why physician practices have not yet started preparing for ICD-10, according to the survey, are:

1. We still have more time to prepare — 36 percent of respondents reported this
2. We do not have the time, staff or training resources to start preparing — 26 percent of respondents reported this
3. We don't know where to start — 22 percent of respondents reported this
4. We believe the deadline will be pushed back — 6 percent of respondents reported this
5. The ICD-10 implementation is not going to affect us greatly — 5 percent of respondents reported this
6. We do not have the funds to start the process — 4 percent of respondents reported this
7. We were not aware of the October 2014 deadline — 1 percent of respondents reported this
