Florence Fiedler claims she underwent a pacemaker procedure at the hospital on Feb. 17, 2010. Following the surgery, Ms. Fiedler allegedly rolled off the operating table and onto the floor while still sedated. The suit states she experienced a traumatic brain injury, broken collar bone, broken hip and broken toe.
Ms. Fiedler’s attorney said she is now unable to climb stairs and lives with her children, according to the report. A hospital spokesperson said Yale-New Haven “deeply regrets this incident,” has apologized to Ms. Fiedler, reported the incident to the Department of Public Health and implemented a corrective plan, according to the report.
The suit claims Ms. Fiedler’s physician, Joseph Akar, MD, did not ensure her safety or did not recognize she was not completely recovered from medications she received during the pacemaker procedure. The suit also names Yale University as a defendant since New-Haven is the school’s primary teaching hospital and seeks more than $15,000 in damages.
