WHO kicks off World Antibiotic Awareness Week: 4 things to know

Monday marks the start of WHO's World Antibiotic Awareness Week, which runs through Nov. 19.

Here are four things to know about the event.

1. World Antibiotic Awareness Week seeks to boost awareness of antibiotic resistance and encourage best practices "among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance," according to WHO.

2. This year's theme is "Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before taking antibiotics."

3. WHO partnered with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Organisation for Animal Health to promote the event.

4. The organizations will share information on antibiotic resistance, along with materials to help reduce antibiotic use, this week via a social media campaign.
