WHO: Half a million babies die each year in unhygienic hospitals in developing countries

The World Health Organization has revealed roughly half a million babies in the world die before they reach a month old due to a lack of clean water and safe sanitation conditions, according to Reuters.

Of those deaths, roughly one in five could have been avoided had the babies been washed in clean water and cared for in a safe, clean environment by people who had washed their hands with soap.

Additionally, more than one third of hospitals and clinics in developing countries have nowhere for staff or patients to wash with soap and nearly 40 percent have no source of water, according to the report.

On top of infant mortality, unhygienic conditions in hospitals drive major disease outbreaks, including cholera, in many countries.
