What swab solution is most effective for disinfecting needleless connectors?

In a randomized clinical study, clinical investigators found a scrub containing 3.15 percent chlorhexidine gluconate and 70 percent isopropyl alcohol more effective than just 70 percent isopropyl alcohol in disinfecting needleless connectors.

The CHG and alcohol scrub used led to less needleless connector contamination than just the alcohol scrub at a five-second scrub time, the study found.

“This study answers a previously unknown clinical question about the most efficacious antiseptic for disinfection of needleless access sites and also ideal prep times,” said Hudson Garrett, PhD, vice president of clinical affairs for PDI. “This study demonstrates the importance of targeted efforts to reduce contamination on needleless access sites and ensure evidence-based practices for disinfection of needleless access sites.”

According to an news release, PDI’s Prevantics Device Swab is the only CHG and alcohol swab on the market that has received market authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for disinfecting needleless access sites before use.
