VHA’s HEN, part of the federal government’s Partnership for Patients program, has already helped its nearly 200 participating hospitals reduce ventilator-associated pneumonia, early elective delivery and central line-associated bloodstream infections by 40 percent through its coaching sessions and on-site visits. It will work toward goals of reducing hospital-acquired conditions by 40 percent and readmissions by 20 percent throughout 2014, according to a news release.

Additional HEN goals for 2014 include reducing patient harm through working with frontline staff, increasing the focus on patient safety in leadership, increased efforts to improve patient and family engagement and the implementation of a hospital-to-hospital mentoring program pairing leading hospitals with struggling ones.
