Researchers connected with medical informatics departments at four U.S. hospitals. The departments were charged with creating and applying a conceptual automated C. difficile surveillance algorithm to their electronic databases. For their study, the researchers compared the effectiveness of electronic surveillance to manual surveillance by chart reviews. A second chart review was performed in case of “discordant results.”
Their research showed the electronic surveillance algorithm was accurate and more rapid than manual surveillance by chart reviews.
