U Iowa Health to Settle Two Medical Malpractice Lawsuits for Combined $391k

The Iowa State Appeals Board has approved two settlements that University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will pay to resolve medical malpractice lawsuits, according to a KWQC report.

The two medical malpractice lawsuits were filed by patients who received care at UIHC in 2004. According to the report, a patient's family will receive a $91,000 settlement to resolve allegations that UIHC's treatment led to the patient's infection and consequent death after a procedure was performed to treat a heart aneurysm.

A separate patient will receive a $300,000 settlement to resolve allegations that a UIHC anesthesiologist "negligently" administered pain relief to a patient before knee surgery.
