Teamwork among top 3 drivers of nurse engagement, survey shows

While more than 73 percent of nurses care about the success of their hospital, only 57.1 percent feel a sense of ownership about their jobs, according to a survey from healthcare research and consultancy firm PRC.

The survey polled 1,923 registered nurses from 37 hospitals.

The survey shows that the top three drivers of nurse engagement are:

1. Autonomy — feeling as though they are active participants in decision-making about patient care.
2. RN-to-RN teamwork and collaboration — feeling as though they are part of a supportive and respectful team.
3. Access to responsiveness by leaders — feeling as though leadership is accessible and responsive to their needs.

Additionally, the survey shows that day-shift nurses tend to be more fully engaged than night-shift nurses and that there are lower percentages of fully engaged millennial nurses (36.8 percent) compared to Gen X nurses (47 percent) and baby boomer nurses (53.4 percent).
