Researchers calculated 30-day readmission rates from Medicare data of patients that had undergone surgery, examining the relationship between this rate and various surgical quality measures, including adherence to surgical process measures, surgical patient volume and surgical mortality.
High adherence to surgical process measures was only slightly associated with lower surgical readmissions rate.
The study also reported that one patient in seven is readmitted to a hospital after undergoing a major surgical procedure.
