Interventions can reduce pediatric medication errors, although optimizing intervention is still elusive, according to a study in Pediatrics.

Researchers analyzed a total of 274 full-text articles and 63 were included in their report. One percent of the studies included were conducted at community hospitals and 11 percent were conducted in ambulatory populations. Variation existed in the methods, definitions, outcomes and rate denominators for all studies.

Studies of computerized provider order entry systems with clinical decision support compared with studies of CPOE systems without clinical decision support showed a 36 percent to 87 percent reduction in prescribing errors. Also, studies of preprinted order sheets revealed a 27 percent to 82 percent reduction in prescribing errors.
