Study: Bullying Participants Don't See Patient Safety Risk

Though studies have shown bullying is a safety hazard, participants in bullying do not see the risk it may pose to patient safety. according to an article published in the Association for periOperative Registered Nurses Journal.

The study tracked bullying behavior among 167 perioperative nurses, surgical technologists and unlicensed perioperative personnel in two academic medical centers.

Approximately 60 percent of respondents witnessed bullying weekly, and 34 percent witnessed bullying at least twice weekly. An ignored opinion was the most common form of bullying, with nearly 30 percent of respondents reporting experiencing the behavior during the study.

Emotional exhaustion was correlated with bullying behavior, according to the study.
