The program involves 33 hospitals that share data and best practices for reducing adverse events related to angioplasties. Through these efforts, experts identified three areas in need of special attention:
1. Blood transfusions may increase the risk of infections, clotting and other complications. As a result, Michigan hospitals have reduced their use of blood transfusions.
2. Michigan hospitals have reduced bleeding complications after hiring experts who are specially trained to safety remove catheters.
3. Hospitals have also reduced their use of contrast dye, which can cause complications.
