University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). Sustainability is a major focus of the University of Maryland Medical Center. UMMC is currently striving to meet the USGBC’s LEED certification standards for two construction and renovation projects — its Shock Trauma Critical Care Tower and a new neonatal intensive care unit. The medical center is also working to reduce its waste and energy consumption, decrease the environmental footprint of its ORs, boost access to healthy and sustainable food, purchase safer chemicals and environmentally friendly products and improve green transportation options. UMMC’s efforts secured it two Practice Greenhealth Circle of Excellence Awards — one for greening the OR and the other for environmentally preferable purchasing .
