A study published in the March issue of the Annals of Emergency Medicine found that patients that use hospital emergency departments at least four times annually are most commonly white and have health insurance and a primary care physician, according to a report in American Medical News.

The authors of the study defined frequent ED users as a patient who visited the ED four or more times in one year and determined frequent users made up 8 percent of EDs’ total patient population. Sixty percent are white, and 60 percent are also Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, according to the report.

Only 15 percent of frequent ED users were uninsured and only 2 percent of uninsured patients visited the ED four or more times in a year, according to the study.
