The State Department raised its travel advisory for Kenya to Level 3, “reconsider travel,” on Oct. 19, citing health risks from Ebola. The CDC has also issued a travel health notice for Kenya.
The advisory was issued as Kenya health officials have confirmed eight Ebola cases. All of the cases are linked to a Kenyan man who died of Ebola after traveling to the Democratic Republic of Congo, ABC News reported. All of the people with confirmed Ebola are in isolation, and there is no sign of community spread, according to Kenya’s Ministry of Health.
Nigeria also confirmed their first Ebola case in a woman who traveled from Uganda, The Washington Post reported. She is current in isolation and receiving treatment, and contact tracing has identified 44 possible contacts.
In Congo, Ebola cases have continued to climb, now reaching more than 9,000 cases and more than 4,000 deaths. It’s the largest outbreak in Congo’s history and the second largest outbreak on record.
The outbreak continues to outpace the response, Heather Kerr, the country director for the International Rescue Committee in Congo, told NPR.
