The vast majority of cases were found in hospitals and nursing homes in Southern Nevada, according to data collected by the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health. The peak could be due to reporting lags and new state regulation.
“There could have been issues with reporting over the holidays and the regulations passed in December, so there may be increased reporting thereafter,” division Deputy Administrator Julia Peek told the Review-Journal.
Cases of C. auris remained steady in 2023 before reaching a high of 63 clinical cases in October. The numbers then dipped before the new January high, according to data.
In 2022, Nevada had the highest number of clinical cases of C. auris — 384 cases — among the 22 states that reported incidence to the CDC.
